Theory of Gravitation, Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology
Einstein's general relativity is the best theory of gravitation
available at present. Despite much recent progress, the observational
basis of the theory is still rather limited. It is therefore important
to develop the astrophysical consequences of general relativity in
connection with relativistic effects in the solar system, gravitational
radiation, black holes, etc. Furthermore, Einstein's classical theory
has not yet been brought into conformity with the quantum theory. A
quantum theory of gravitation must reconcile the fundamental principles
of quantum theory with the foundations of general relativity. Recent research efforts include studies of black holes, gravitational radiation and relativistic celestial mechanics. The spin-rotation-gravity couplings have been investigated in connection with the foundations of the theory of gravitation. The goal of the main research program at present is the development of a nonlocal field theory that goes beyond general relativity and is compatible with the principle of complementarity.
